AbstractUsing OI 630.0 nm all-sky images, obtained by ground-based imaging systems installed at Cachoeira Paulista (22.7° S, 45.0° W, DIP angle -37.6°) and Sao Martinho da Serra (29.4° S, 53.8° W, DIP angle = -37.3°), a set of Medium Scale Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (MSTIDs) were detected. The propagation direction was Northwestward, indicating that they are related to Perkins instability at mid-latitudes. The events occurred in geomagnetically quiet periods (Kp<3) and were associated with spread F in the ionograms of three different digisondes: Cachoeira Paulista, Port Stanley (51.6° S, 57.9° W, DIP angle = - 49.8°) and Ascension Island (07,95° S, 14.4° W, DIP angle = -43.4°). Numerical simulations were conducted to evaluate the role of the South America Magnetic Anomaly (SAMA) in the generation of acoustic-gravity waves (AGWs) and MSTIDs in the Southern Hemisphere. The results show that the Joule effect caused by the enhancement of the E region current, due to the particles precipitation in the SAMA should generate AGWs, which can act as a trigger of Perkins instability at mid-latitudes. This paper present and discusses the features of AGWs generated by SAMA, its propagation properties and interaction with electromagnetic process that can generate MSTIDs in the Southern Hemisphere.
